Aging and Pain

Aug 15, 2025 1:00:00 PM • Written by: Tait Weigel

Many of us have increasing pain as we age. Some say arthritis is aggravated by weather conditions, diet, lack of adequate sleep, or even grief. Whatever your pain comes from, you likely try different remedies recommended by your healthcare provider and friends.

I once wrote to my cousin who was spending winter in Texas, "My husband is in pain and is a pain".  I understand how being in chronic pain can make a person irritable, and less than good company. Osteoarthritis in low back and knees are my painful areas. Some days are better than others. I do notice weather impacts my pain level.

Recently I signed up for chair yoga at the Senior Resource Center. The instructor is guiding us through gentle movements. It's quiet except for soft music in the background, and the instructor’s voice. Twice a week I look forward to classes. There are no steps into the building, and there's close parking. I hope it will offer me some pain relief and improve my general health.

You may find walking, massage, applying heat or cold, short naps, and meditating to be a help. Do what you can and discuss pain when you visit your primary care giver. There are medications to help with many things. It's important to mention any over the counter things you are using to be sure they are compatible with your medications.

Thank you for reading my thoughts again.
