Thoughts on Aging

There are several sites about aging on You Tube. All have been helpful for understanding my own passage into the 80's. There is also a Facebook group for women over 80 to share their thoughts, concerns, and joys.

I'm now 83, well on my way into the 80's. I no longer have long term goals, a need to have a big purpose, or big plans, productivity is low and need for companionship is less. Subtle changes that include how time feels. I've talked about time being like an accordian. Sometimes it seems long ago when remembering things, and others not long ago when actually it was years.

I need to have quiet time. Days may go by without seeing another person. It's nice when I see my family and friends, but more of a treat than a need. I've lived alone almost 12 years. It was a big change in the early months. I learned to enjoy only having myself and my kitty to care for. I've had time for my memories to pop up, to see my earlier years objectively. Time to write essays, to thin out possessions and make plans for the week.

For the most part I've gradually moved away from many groups in order to preserve my free time. Having medical appointments is an outing that's necessary. Taking drives on back roads is a mini vacation. Stopping to watch a beatiful sunset is a pleasure.

I've always valued friendships and as I've gotten older, friendships are even more precious to me. I may not see friends often, but we talk on the phone and try to get together for lunch or breakfast every few weeks

Aging is teaching me patience, gratitude for good things in my life, and appreciation for medical care.
